Rosie Duffield MP attended the 40th anniversary celebration of the Treaty of Canterbury at Canterbury Cathedral earlier this week, where she welcomed the French Ambassador and other dignitaries to the city.
The Treaty of Canterbury was signed at the Cathedral on 12 February 1986 by Margaret Thatcher and President François Mitterrand. The agreement enabled the construction of the undersea railway tunnels, bringing the United Kingdom closer to Europe. This marked an important milestone in the bilateral relationship and continues to support strong professional, cultural and social ties with neighbouring countries.
Many of in Canterbury value the area’s proximity to France and remain frustrated that the UK is no longer a member of the European Union. As a constituency with a strong international outlook—and one of only two in Kent that voted to remain in the EU—these connections are particularly significant. Trade partnerships and cultural links are vital to the local economy in ways that differ from other parts of the UK.
