Last Friday, I met with representatives from the University of Kent’s University and College Union (UCU) branch to discuss the latest round of cuts at the University, which will result in closures of multiple courses in the Arts and Humanities departments.
Around 60 academic staff are also expecting to lose their jobs – after long careers there.
I have written to the University’s leadership team to urge them to consider the staff’s counterproposals to the cuts, and to also consider the serious impact such cuts will have, not only on these individuals but also on the University itself and its value to the local economy.
