International Women's Network welcomes election of Canterbury's first female MP
Carole Townsend, President of the Canterbury branch of Soroptomist International, welcomed the election of Rosie Duffield this week as Canterbury’s first female MP. The Soroptomists are a global movement of women who exist to educate, empower and enable opportunities for women and girls across the world. Rosie was elected as one of a record number of female MP’s at this years General Election(208) but men still outnumber women almost 2:1. It wasn’t until the 2015 parliament that the total number of female MPs in history surpassed the number of male MPs in a single parliament.
Standing up for Refugees
Yesterday saw the end of Refugee Week and to celebrate Rosie Duffield, MP for Canterbury, attended the fundraising “Refugee Tea” arranged by the Whitstable-Calais Solidarity Group. Refugee Week was started in 1998 as a direct reaction to the hostility in the media and society towards refugees and asylum seekers. It aims to facilitate positive encounters between refugees and the general public, showcase the talent and expertise refugees bring with them to the UK and raise awareness of the reality of refugee experience.
Closure of Kent & Canterbury "not good enough"
Yesterday I spoke to ITV News about the fight to stop the loss of services at the Kent and Canterbury Hospital. As of now, stroke or heart attack patients are being diverted to William Harvey or QEQM in Margate. People are no longer going to be able to make it to KCH in an ambulance and the people of Canterbury, Whitstable and the Surrounding Villages know that it's dangerous. We've been told this is to not compromise patient safety by the NHS chiefs, but that's good enough for our constituents in an emergency.
Celebrating the Great Get Together
Today I was delighted to join one of the many Great Get Together lunches happening across Canterbury, Whitstable and the Villages organised in memory of Jo Cox, aiming to bring together the huge mix of people that make up the community in our fantastic constituency.
