International Women’s Network welcomes election of Canterbury’s first female MP

Carole Townsend, President of the Canterbury branch of Soroptomist International, welcomed the election of Rosie Duffield this week as Canterbury’s first female MP. The Soroptomists are a global movement of women who exist to educate, empower and enable opportunities for women and girls across the world.

Rosie was elected as one of a record number of female MP’s at this years General Election(208) but men still outnumber women almost 2:1. It wasn’t until the 2015 parliament that the total number of female MPs in history surpassed the number of male MPs in a single parliament.

Rosie is a prominent supporter of the cross party 50:50 campaign which is seeking to ensure women make up at least 50% of MP’s elected to parliament and encourage women to run for elected office. Last week she tweeted her support for the campaign which was camped outside of the Houses of Parliament, encouraging people to sign a petition and force a debate on the issue in the House of Commons.
